How can salt air ruin a sterling silver tiffany necklace?

i just got a tiffany necklace from my boyfriend. %26amp; im going to the beach, how can salt air ruin it? %26amp; what will it do to my necklace?|||Salt is corrosive to silver, like water is to iron. The salt in the air will land on the silver and start to eat at it. You might not want to wear it to the beach. It's okay if you do, just be sure to clean the necklace as soon as you get home. Also, store it in an airtight plastic bag when you are not wearing it, that will keep if from tarnishing.|||Oxidization. The salt in the air triggers a chemical reaction in the metal that can blemish or dull the luster of the necklace. Sodium Chloride AKA salt has been known to corrode silver copper alloys, for example look at the top of a salt shaker and you can see corrosion around the top. Don't worry though, there are products that can clean off all of that crap and prevent it from happening and besides, unless you pour a ton of salt on your necklace or throw it in the water, you aren't going to harm it. However, I personally wouldn't take it to the beach due to all of the sand and water.
